Dear Members of the Horace Mann Laboratory School Community,
Â
I am writing to you to introduce myself and our new faculty. I am most honored to have the opportunity to be a part of this school community, which has such astoried history and strong unity. I have been so warmly welcomed by the faculty, staff and families and look forward to seeing this very positive energy in action.
As we begin this new year together, I would like to share a bit about myself. My wife and I live in downtown Beverly with our two sons, who are 5 and 6. We enjoy coming over the bridge to Salem’s great summer festivals and museums. I grew up in Reading and attended college in upstate New York, earning degrees in education and biology. For four years I taught middle and high school science, after which time I took a position at Harvard’s Museum of Natural History. After the birth of my first son I found Cambridge to be a long commute, and was fortunate to begin work in Salem as a Science Integration Specialist. I served at the Bentley and Carlton Elementary Schools for 5 years, writing grants, helping to launch several green initiatives, and teaching science labs. Last year I was a fifth grade
classroom teacher and assistant principal in Peabody.
In addition to myself, we have several other new professionals. Elizabeth Beaver will be our new Inclusion Specialist Teacher, working with students in grades 3, 4 and 5. She has a solid background in teaching children and adults with a variety of learning styles, and also has children in the first and fourth grades at our school. Kristi-Lynn Craig will be working with students in the first and second grade Learning Skills program. She has taught for 5 years in Ohio, before relocating to Salem with her husband and two young children. I am also honored to welcome Ana Nuccio, who will be supporting students for whom English is a second language. She has many years experience writing and editing the materials we use with our students, and has taught Spanish and English at several schools in the area.
Mary Westra will be our new Speech Pathologist. Last year she taught in Hamilton-Wenham, and has several years of experience prior to this. In Kindergarten we will have Mary-Jane Schram coming over from the Early Childhood Center, where she has done wonderful work with young children. Finally, Christine Tupper, formerly a 3, 4, 5 teacher here, has taken on a new role at the school, as our counselor.
This year breakfast will be served starting at 7:30, and the playground will be open at 7:40. Before 7:40 we do not have supervision available. The school day begins at 7:50, and we appreciate your support in having students here by this time.
I look forward to meeting you all in person, and to a wonderful year here at the Horace Mann Laboratory School. If you would like to put a name with a face before the start of the school year, I will be hosting a morning coffee on Monday, August, 30 from 8:00 – 9:30and a tea Tuesday, August 31 from 4:00-5:30.

                                                                                              Best regards,
