Dear Parents,
It hardly seems possible that it is May already! Where did the school year go? In the Mannuscript this month, you will find a calendar for the 2008/2009 school year. Dates specific to Horace Mann Lab School will be provided in a summer mailing in August.
Happenings for May: Our students in grades 3, 4 and 5 are taking the MCAS test during the weeks of May 12 and 19. For this round, students in grades 3 and 4 will take the math test. Grade 5 students take tests in math, science/technology and history. Please remember that May 26th is Memorial Day so there is no school.
Happenings for June: June promises to be a busy month. Concerts, Portfolio Day and our Fifth Grade Moving-On Ceremony are just a few special events planned for the month. The following is a list for your information.
June 3 – 4th and 5th grade instrumental concert @ 9 AM/SSC Auditorium
June 5 – All School Portfolio Day 8:15 – 9:15 AM in classrooms
June 6 – Art Show and School Musical - “The Pied Piper” - @ 6 PM
June 10 –All School Choral Concert @ 9 AM/SSC Auditorium
June 12 – All School Field Day/Forest River Park
June 16 – 5th grade Moving-On Ceremony @ 9/SSC Auditorium
June 20 – Last Day of School – dismissal at 11:35
Your children and our teachers have worked hard to make these programs successful. I hope you will try to be at as many of these special events as time your time allows.
A word about clothing: With the warm weather upon us, it is important that you understand our expectations for appropriate dress for school days. Because school is a place for learning, we discourage clothing that is distracting and/or inappropriate. When, in the judgment of the school, clothing worn by a student is considered inappropriate or distracting, he/she may be sent home or loaned clothes from school to wear for the remainder of the school day. To that end, please read the following carefully and check your child’s dress before he/she comes to school.
- For safety reasons, students are not allowed to wear sandals and/or open toed shoes to school. They present a safety hazard on the playground and on the stairs.
- Spaghetti straps, strapless tops and tops that bare the midriff are not allowed at school. Tank tops and very short skirts are discouraged for students in the upper grades.
- Dangling earrings and long chains around necks are also a safety hazard as they can get caught on playground equipment.
Should you have questions or comments about appropriate clothing, please feel free to call or e-mail me. I look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Diane O'Donnell
Cute, but not allowed at school!
